Position Play
The difference between potting and running the table.
Thinking in zones, not points
Beginners aim to leave the cue ball at a point. Better players aim for a zone — an area on the table from which the next shot is available. Zones are forgiving; points aren't.
Every position shot has a natural zone. If the shape you're chasing is a 6-inch circle, either your route is wrong or the previous shot was.
Mapping the table into six functional zones
Rather than thinking of the table as one continuous surface, break it mentally into six zones: the two baulk-area zones (near each short rail), the two side zones (the strips running along each long rail roughly one diamond wide), and the two central zones (the open area in the middle third of the table, split left and right of an imaginary centerline running head to foot). Every position shot is best described not as "send the cue ball to a point" but as "send the cue ball into zone X, with a preference for the near edge of that zone." Central zones give the most shot options for the next ball because they offer full-table sightlines to every pocket; side zones restrict you to shots that don't require crossing the table at a severe angle; baulk zones are useful specifically for cluster-breaking and safety exits but rarely ideal for potting the next ball directly.
Zone quality grading
Grade each zone landing for a given next shot on a simple A/B/C scale before you shoot the current ball. An A-zone landing gives you a straight or near-straight shot at the next ball with a clear cue-ball path after that. A B-zone landing gives you a shot with some cut angle but still a workable route onward. A C-zone landing gives you a shot, technically, but likely with limited follow-up options — you'll be "hooking yourself" into a corner for the ball after next. Players who consistently run multiple balls grade three shots ahead, not one: the zone you're aiming for on this shot must lead logically into an A-grade zone for the shot after.
Worked example: three-ball sequence
You have three balls left before the 8-ball: one in the top-left area, one near center-table, one bottom right. The 8-ball sits near the bottom rail, makeable to the bottom-right corner pocket. Working backward: for the 8-ball shot, you want a straight-in or slight-angle shot from the bottom-right zone — call that the target A-zone. The ball nearest the bottom right, therefore, should be played with position that leaves the cue ball in that same bottom-right A-zone (not just "somewhere near it"). That means, for the second-to-last ball, you likely want low-to-medium follow or a stop shot depending on the cut angle, aiming to travel only a short distance so the cue ball stays controlled rather than drifting to an unpredictable side zone. The center-table ball, played before that, should be shot with position that lands the cue ball in the zone that gives a clean, uncomplicated route to the bottom-right ball — likely a soft draw or stun shot rather than a big-swing follow that risks overrunning into a side zone and losing the angle on the next shot entirely.
Zone tolerance versus cut angle
A useful numeric heuristic: the size of an acceptable landing zone shrinks as the cut angle on the next shot increases. For a straight-in next shot, your landing tolerance might be a full two-foot radius and still leave an easy shot. For a next shot with a 30-degree cut, tolerance shrinks to roughly one foot, because small position errors translate into much larger effective cut-angle errors once you're already cutting at an angle. For a next shot with a 45-degree-plus cut near a pocket, tolerance shrinks further still, often to six inches or less — this is why professionals avoid leaving themselves severe cut angles whenever a zone alternative exists, even if the severe-cut option looks tempting because the ball itself appears "closer" to the pocket.
Zone-based error diagnosis
When a position shot goes wrong, diagnose which of three causes was responsible before adjusting your stroke: (1) wrong zone selected — you aimed for a zone that wasn't actually going to set up the next shot even if you'd hit it perfectly; (2) right zone, wrong speed — you picked correctly but under- or over-hit, landing short or long of the intended zone along the same general path; (3) right zone, wrong line — a stroke or English error sent the cue ball off to the side of the intended path entirely. Keeping a running mental (or written) tally of which of these three you most often commit tells you whether to work on shot-planning, speed control, or stroke mechanics — three very different remedies for three very different problems that all look like "bad position" to an untrained eye.
Drill: zone-landing consistency test
- Chalk or tape a rough two-foot-diameter circle on the cloth (or visualize it clearly) in a central zone.
- Shoot the same position shot ten times from the same starting layout, attempting to land the cue ball inside the circle each time.
- Pass criterion: 7 of 10 landings inside the circle. Shrink the circle to eighteen inches once you pass consistently, and again to twelve inches as your control improves.
Pattern play
Before you shoot the first ball, plan the last three. Work backward from the 8-ball: which pocket, which side of the cue ball, which rail. Then find the "key ball" — the one that lets you land in the shape zone for the 8. Then the "key to the key". This is how professionals run racks.
The full backward-planning sequence
Professional pattern play always begins at the end of the rack and works backward through every ball, not just the last three. The full sequence is: identify the 8-ball's pocket and the angle you want on it; identify the "key ball" — the last object ball before the 8 — and the zone it must be played from and into; identify the "key to the key" — the ball before that, which must land the cue ball in position to play the key ball correctly; then continue backward through the entire remaining layout, ball by ball, until you reach the ball you're about to shoot right now. Only after this full backward pass do you actually execute forward, ball by ball, checking after each shot whether the plan still holds or needs a live adjustment.
Decision rules for selecting a pattern
- Clear clusters and problem balls early, while you still have full control of the table and multiple balls available to use as "insurance" if the break-up shot doesn't go perfectly to plan.
- Play the most difficult or most restrictive ball (the one with the fewest pocket options or the tightest position requirement) as early as reasonably possible, while the table layout still offers you flexibility to route around it if it goes wrong.
- Save the most spatially convenient balls — the ones near multiple pockets with generous position zones on every side — for later in the sequence, because they tolerate imperfect position from whatever came before.
- Never play a ball that blocks your own path to a later ball unless there is no alternative order — treat other object balls as moving obstacles in your route planning, not just as targets.
- When two viable patterns exist, choose the one requiring less cue-ball travel overall; shorter routes accumulate less error across a full rack than long cross-table routes repeated ball after ball.
Worked example: a seven-ball layout
Picture seven object balls scattered with one tight cluster of two balls near a top rail, one isolated ball near a side pocket, two balls in the open center, and the 8-ball in a bottom corner with a clear lane. Backward planning starts at the 8: you want to approach from the center of the table with a gentle angle, so the key ball should be one of the two center balls, played to leave a stun or light-draw position back toward center. The key to the key, then, is the other center ball or the side-pocket ball, whichever naturally feeds into position for that key ball. The cluster near the top rail, since it offers the least flexibility and the highest risk of a bad outcome if mishandled, gets broken up early — likely as the very first or second ball of the whole sequence, using a combination of a pot and a controlled carom off the second ball in the cluster to separate them for later use, while the cue ball is still routed toward an open, low-pressure zone for the next decision.
Adjusting the plan live
A pattern plan is a hypothesis, not a contract. After every shot, spend one full second re-evaluating: did the cue ball land where planned? If it landed in the intended zone, proceed with the original plan. If it landed adjacent but workable, adjust only the next one or two shots rather than replanning the whole rack. If it landed badly out of position, stop and fully replan from the current position outward — do not force the original pattern onto a table state it was never designed for, since forcing a stale plan onto new cue-ball geometry is the single most common cause of a promising run ending in an unnecessary safety or scratch.
Drill: five-ball pattern-recall test
- Rack five object balls randomly with one make-able 8-ball-equivalent target. Study the layout for fifteen seconds, then look away and verbally state your full backward plan, ball by ball, out loud or on paper.
- Execute the plan.
- Pass criterion: complete the full five-ball run using your originally stated order without needing to reorder any ball. Occasional zone or speed misses are acceptable; reordering the sequence counts as a planning failure.
- Repeat with increasingly cluttered layouts as your pass rate improves past 7 of 10 attempts.
